One Hall. Five Cimbaloms. Countless Colors.

Looking for something new and exciting for your next project? Look no further! We brought five cimbaloms to our favorite modern orchestral hall and sampled them all together. The cimbalom already has a captivating, exotic sound. But the Cimbalom Ensemble takes it up a notch, with an epic and dramatic sound that is sure to inspire!

Cimbaloms can sound harsh or mysterious depending on how the strings are struck, so the Cimbalom ensemble includes a wide range of playing techniques along with several tremolo varieties for sustained sounds. The ensemble is great for creating tension and light atmosphere alike! With 3 microphone perspectives (close, decca, wide), the range of colors in the ensemble is massive. Plus, the custom sounds created from the Cimbalom Ensemble open up all kinds of new possibilities!

The sounds of the Cimbalom Ensemble are, for lack of a better word, awesome! It can stand on its own with its distinct timbre, support other instruments with a sharp attack, or even become an ethereal, prickly pad. We fell in love with the sound instantly, and we think you will too.

The Cimbalom is a type of dulcimer that is common in the folk music of Central and Eastern Europe. It has a trapezoidal wooden body with metal strings that are struck to produce sound. The cimbalom is often played with the fingers as well, and can produce a range of tones from soft and mellow to bright and percussive. It is known for its distinct, rich sound among other dulcimer-like instruments. It dates back to the late nineteenth century, although its progenitors go back centuries longer, with a lot of evolution throughout the ages.

We sampled the Cimbalom Ensemble with all kinds of striking techniques. There are the standard sustained and staccatos, along with hard staccatos (a very sharp attack and no sustain) and slow staccatos (with a softer attack, a short sustain, and a more relaxed tone). The Bartók (a.k.a. Snap Pizz.) is a special plucking technique for the violin family of instruments, where the string is plucked hard enough that it “snaps” back and strikes the fingerboard. The cimbalom version sounds amazing, too, and adds an extra percussive element to the sound, but does not stop the string from ringing out on a cimbalom.

The strummed part sounds looser, with a couple of distinct attacks. And then there are 4 kinds of tremolo: The regular tremolo part creates a sustaining, continuously strumming sound that is ethereal in soft dynamics and frighteningly harsh in higher dynamics (give it a try with dynamic sustains). The short tremolo fades out over a few seconds, kind of like dropping a bouncy ball and letting it come to a rest. The picked tremolo adds more tension to the sustains, with more distinct and rapid attacks, and the muted tremolo.

The custom synths expand the colors of the ensemble beyond the realm of possibilities! There are ethereal, flutey sounds, warm, guitar-like sounds, supermassive mega plucks, sparkling pads, and so much more! Give Dynamic Sustains a try and create a half-synthetic cimbalom organ!

We have experimented with unique instruments and larger-than-life ensembles many times, and the results are so inspiring. There are so many more possibilities with Cimbaloms than we ever would have thought, and when you get really good ingredients like this, the samples themselves can inspire new ideas when you’re writing music. Fun sessions like this are one of the joys of modern music and technology, and we know you will feel that passion when you play the Cimbalom Ensemble, too!

Soundpaint is a new-generation sample engine that brings you closer than ever to the instruments with new sound morphing technology and infinite dynamic layers.
