We used Plutchik’s Wheel of emotions as our starting point for emotions. The wheel is a model that helps us understand how human emotions relate to each other. It was created by psychologist Robert Plutchik, who studied emotions in animals and humans. He identified eight primary emotions that are essential for survival: joy, sadness, trust, disgust, fear, anger, surprise, and anticipation. These emotions have opposite pairs, such as joy and sadness, or fear and anger. They also have different levels of intensity, such as rage and annoyance for anger, or ecstasy and serenity for joy. Plutchik's Wheel also shows how emotions can combine to form complex feelings, such as love (ecstasy + admiration), or awe (amazement + terror).
Having these guitars in Soundpaint is really interesting, as it allows us to explore the wheel of emotions even further. What kinds of complex feelings can we bring out by morphing and combining the 32 emotions? What happens when you morph joy with fear? If we stack 2 positive emotions, like love and optimism, with a negative emotion like remorse, perhaps we can pinpoint specific spots on the wheel.
I was thinking it would be fun to print out the wheel and throw darts to come up with some new emotions. If I land on rage, near the top left corner, maybe I can mix vigilance, aggressiveness, and anger in the perfect way to get a new sub-emotion. If you uncover or create any cool vibes, be sure to let us know on the Soundpaint Discord!
