1980 Rhode Studio 54: The Ultimate Suitcase

The Rhodes became a studio staple because it could support emotion without dominating a mix. It adds warmth, movement, and space without demanding attention. The 1980 Rhode Studio 54 is one of the most comprehensively deep-sampled Suitcase pianos ever created. Recorded at Scotland’s premiere Gorbals Sound through a large custom NEVE desk, this instrument was captured at 24-Bit / 96Khz to ensure every nuance of its analogue soul was preserved.

The World-Class Signal Flow

We didn't just record the output: we treated the session like a high-end record production. The signal flow was 100% analogue and further enhanced with a physical hardware chain including a Manley Vari Mu Compressor, original Urei 1176, original DBX 160, and a Neve 33609 Compressor.

To give you total control over the sound, we used an array of world-class microphones:

  • The Mic Locker: Neumann 87’s, Coles ribbons, Neve SE Ribbons, AKG 414’s, and Neumann KM 184’s.

  • The 24-Mic Mix: We even created a mixed microphone position by combining all 24 microphones used in the sessions.

  • Pristine Reverb: All samples were also recorded through world-class Bricasti and TC-Electronics 6000 hardware reverbs.

Prepared Articulations and Natural Detail

The Rhode Studio 54 goes far beyond standard sustains. We opened the Suitcase and recorded the insides, plucking the tines and gently muting them for different types of "prepared" sounds. This includes sustains, staccatos with round-robins, and plucked tines.

We believe that removing imperfections removes the soul of the instrument. Mechanical noise, tamping resonance, and natural variation were left intact because that is where the emotion lives. You have full control over velocity response, tremolo rate, resonance, pedal volume, and analogue noise. This is an incredibly warm, cinematic, and emotive experience: the ultimate sampled Suitcase piano for modern R&B, Film Cues, and Neo-Soul.
