Bras Tin Can Rod

The Hidden Beauty of Cans...

One day, Nicolas stumbled upon an interesting sound - striking a metal rod attached to a tin can with a mallet. Wow! How many notes can he get from this idea? 37. Unfortunately, the only way to gather enough cans was to buy them, full of food, and then eat it all…

After suffering through that, he at last had his newest instrument! A keyboard made of serrated rods and tin cans. Striking the rod produces a pure and bright tone, but striking the edge of the can creates a somewhat muffled, almost steel-drum-like sound.

Like Bras’ other metallic instruments, the Tin Can Rods sounds somewhere in-between traditional mallet instruments. A little bit like a steel drum, a little like a music box, and a little bit like tubular bells (chimes). The Soundpaint library includes a hard and soft mallet for the rods and a hard mallet for the cans.

Nicolas Bras is a musical instrument creator, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Paris, France. He began making his own instruments from scrap materials over 15 years ago, and has now developed 1000+ prototypes of winds, strings and percussion that he shares on his popular YouTube channel.

When not inventing in his workshop, you might find Bras enjoying a live concert or traveling for collaborations with other instrument makers, composers and musicians. We are thrilled to partner with Nicolas Bras to share his incredible inventions with our Soundpaint community.
