A Delicate Rain on Strings
This one-of-a-kind instrument from the mind and hands of Nicolas Bras starts with glass marbles from a water treatment plant. They sound great in shakers, but the idea for this instrument was to create a gentle rain on the strings, to create a unique texture on sustained notes. The lyre worked perfectly, thanks to the empty space in the instrument allowing the marbles to pass through. The rest of the instrument uses soft pipes with spring clips for the keyboard, a plexiglass tank and a receptacle for the marbles.
The tank has to be refilled manually, and while the physical instrument has some autonomy, it is much easier to play as a virtual instrument. The lyre has a rich and storied history among musical instruments, and this new evolution is truly something special. The dropping marbles create a strum-like sound on the strings, but the strumming is so fast that it almost begins to sound like a bowed, sustaining string.
